NWO Terminal has been Germany's most important petroleum import terminal since 1958. It currently handles some 20 million tonnes annually. A tank storage facility connects to it, which can hold 1.6 million m³. From there, pipelines (28" to Wesseling near Cologne and 22" to Hamburg) supply refineries in the hinterland. Moreover, petroleum is transferred by pipelines to caverns in and around Wilhelmshaven as well as in the Münsterland region for strategic stock holding.
